How to Improve Home Thermal Performance

Improve Home Thermal Performance

Nearly half of a household’s energy is consumed by heating and cooling, so making smart choices in these areas will have the biggest impact on utility bills. Several low-cost solutions can reduce energy consumption, but the best approach is to start with a comprehensive home assessment (often called a “home energy audit”).

Newer homes tend to have the spray foam insulation room for efficiency improvements as they are built to higher standards, though every house has areas where improvement is possible. Homes constructed prior to 2000 require the most improvement, with older buildings typically having minimal insulation and single-pane windows that fall short of modern standards. Larger houses use more energy to heat and cool due to greater volume, while standalone houses typically use 10%-20% more energy than apartments/condos.

Optimize Attic Air Circulation

Many state and local government programs offer free energy assessments or rebates to help low-income households pay for these energy savings projects. Contact your local energy office or utility company to learn more about these opportunities. If new equipment is in the budget, installing properly installed efficient heating and cooling equipment will save money on energy costs and extend equipment life. A good place to start is by opening curtains/shades on west-and south-facing windows during the day, allowing sunlight to naturally heat your home. This can save 2%-12% on your energy bill. Similarly, lowering hot water temperature by 10°F can cut your energy use by 3% a year.
