Insulating the attic is a great way to maximize home energy efficiency, indoor comfort, and indoor air quality. But it’s important to prepare the attic properly before having insulation installed, or you may end up compromising all three of those goals.

First, fiberglass insulation sure that you can access your attic easily and safely. You will need to clear out furniture, boxes and other items stored in the attic, and it’s a good idea to get this done well in advance of your insulation project.

Next, inspect the condition of existing insulation. Whether your attic is insulated with fiberglass batts or blown-in cellulose, it’s important to assess its condition. Look for signs of compression or moisture damage, and consider having it replaced if it’s in poor condition.

Also, check to see that the attic hatch and ductwork are sealed tightly. This helps to keep unwanted air from leaking into the living space below, as well as prevents hot or cold air from entering the attic and reducing the efficiency of your home’s heating or cooling system.

Finally, look for areas where warm attic air is escaping into the living space below, as this can lead to inconsistent indoor temperatures and cause condensation, mold growth or even ice dams in cold climates. It’s a good idea to seal these leaks before adding additional insulation to your attic. To seal these holes, use caulking to create a tight seal around the outside edges of the attic hatch and around the ductwork entry points into the attic.
