Overlay attacks use an attacker-generated screen that resembles the legitimate user interface of an app, fooling users into entering their sensitive information into a malicious window. This information is sent directly to the attacker and can include passwords, login credentials, pin codes or credit card numbers. This type of attack is also known as data harvesting.

Fraudsters posing as customer support members of banks, investment firms or even well-known brands lure users into downloading these screen-sharing apps. Once the download is done, fraudsters sitting in a remote location can access the victims’ devices and view the app screens. They then start making notes of any information that they can see on the screen, including OTP codes, CVV, card number etc.

There is no valid reason for anyone to ask you to install an app or remotely access your device, so it is always a red flag if someone approaches you out of the blue asking to do that. Moreover, only trusted people and tech support should be allowed to use your device or screen.
