Online games are accessible and immersive experiences that can easily become addictive. The low barriers to entry and the availability of endless hours of gameplay can encourage an obsession with gaming that may interfere with sleep patterns, social interactions, and daily responsibilities. Additionally, the rewards and progression systems in many games can encourage an addiction to escapism and gratification.
Online Gaming vs. Console Gaming: Which One Reigns Supreme?
While MMOGs such as World of Warcraft have high-end graphics and computing power, they have their roots in some of the earliest computing technologies, including ARPANET (a precursor to the Internet). The first multiplayer online game was called MUD, an acronym for Multiuser Dungeon. Its simple text-based interface allowed users to log on to a central mainframe server and interact in a virtual world in what was close to real time.
A study on online gaming found that college students who spend 30 h or more online per week have a lower CGPA than those who do not. It is believed that the relationship between CGPA and online gaming depends on many factors, including student’s demographic profiles, habits of daily exercise and extracurricular activities, frequency of class bunking, and more.
