What You Need to Know About AI Games
AI has been used in video game design since the industry’s earliest days. Pong featured rudimentary AI opponents that tracked the ball’s movements, while Pac-Man utilized decision-making to chase or evade players. More recently, generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Grok) has been used to generate images and music, while IBM’s Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov. In the game development process, AI can help streamline content creation and testing. It can also enhance storytelling, adding more realistic characters and locations. It can also remaster graphics for older games to make them look more modern.
However, AI cannot replace human creativity in gaming. Ethical and moral decisions still need to be made in order to create a well-rounded gameplay experience. AI can aid in these processes by identifying bugs and performance issues, but the final judgment of game quality often relies on human testing and feedback.
Non-Player Characters
In open-world games like the GTA series, AI manages NPC behavior to improve realism and immersion. The latest NPC AI can hunt players, building on the generic attack/defend mode by using audible and physical disturbances to the environment—such as footsteps or a twig snapping underfoot—to identify other players.
Other uses of AI in video games include detecting cheating and automatically increasing difficulty levels as the player progresses through the game. This is a growing area of interest for developers, given the potential to increase revenues from players who purchase in-game upgrades.
